Don’t Stress Out When Shopping For Children’s Holiday Gifts

Holiday toys should be just as safe as they are fun. Here are a few things to keep in mind when looking for the perfect present.

It really is better to give than to receive. The holidays are that one time of year when everyone seems to go the extra mile to get that perfect gift especially for all the little ones in their lives. You’ve got to admit that watching a child get that present they’ve been waiting for is more fun for you! But while you’re in the middle of your gift-buying craze, here are a few safety tips that will keep mom and dad’s mind at ease.

Okay, so I know what you’re thinking, I don’t have time to do a little homework! I just want something under the tree. Just a few minutes on the web can save you hours in the returns line. This kind of research is focused on safety. Many stores are not up to date with the latest safety information on toys. In fact, I recently read an article about a woman that purchased a toy that had been recalled that she purchased at a local toy store. You can avoid this by checking out www.cpsc.gov. This website announces all of the most current recalls and can help you shop smart.

Let’s be honest, silence really is golden unless it’s the wonderful sound of kids laughing. Most people want to avoid toys that make a lot of noise; but did you know that there’s actually a good reason to avoid them? Certain toys that make sounds are not regulated and are actually loud enough to cause hearing damage to young children. Kids tend to put their ear next the speakers on these toys, and that can simply be too close. A good rule of thumb: if it hurts your ears, leave it at the store.

We see so many labels on products that it becomes “white noise” and it’s easy to glance over a safety label or ignore it completely. But they’re there for a reason! Before you get in line or press the place order button, take a closer look at the age recommendation. Many people argue that their child is advanced and can handle the more sophisticated toys, but when dealing with a child’s safety you are better safe than sorry. Small parts are a disaster in waiting and we all know that kids tend to place things in their mouth. Marbles, magnets, and other tiny pieces must be kept away from young children regardless of their intelligence level.

Last but not least is a comment on cleaning up. It’s Christmas morning, mom and dad have their coffee in hand and watch the kids open boxes like 49’ers going after a gold strike. Soon you’re surrounded by a sea of wrapping paper and empty boxes. Take a few minutes to clear the area, this won’t just help your house looking nicer; it will help keep your kids safe. The fact that the toy is safe doesn’t mean that the packaging is too. There are so many little plastic pieces and zip ties in that empty box that can be become a safety hazard in the wrong hands or swallowed by a family pet.

So now you have a list that you can check twice before your shopping adventure begins. Keeping these tips in mind and taking a little extra time before you hit the buy button will make the joy of the season cheerful and less stressful.

Why Buy Kids Puzzles as Gifts Online

If you need to purchase a gift for a niece, cousin, grandchild, or friend of the family who is pretty young, you’ve probably faced the challenge of brainstorming some ideas. You could give in and just ask the parents for some clues but that’s never as much fun as selecting your own gift. Kids puzzles, which come in a wide variety of fun types, are a good idea and can be conveniently purchased online. Here are some good reasons to make your gift purchases online.

Convenience & Selection

Two of the best reasons to look for kids puzzles on the Internet have to be the convenience of online shopping and the wide selection available through web-based vendors. Local stores usually carry a very limited number of kids puzzles. You may be able to find more at specialty boutiques but the prices are generally higher and the stores are harder to locate.

When you buy online, you’ll be able to look a huge assortment of kids puzzles from different sites and decide on something you really think will be a great choice for the child. Another nice benefit is that you can usually have the item gift wrapped and shipped directly to the recipient. That’s a huge time saver and can be nice if you live far away.

Better for Surprises

Even if you are buying kids puzzles for your own children, shopping online can have tremendous benefits. With young children, you usually don’t have the luxury of running errands alone so buying surprise gifts is nearly impossible. However, when you buy online you don’t have to bring along the little ones – you can keep them entertained or wait until nap time. Plus, they won’t see the kids puzzles in the cart or in the trunk of the car. When the item discreetly arrives at your home, you can stash it safely elsewhere without the curious eyes of your kids ever getting a peek.

This is a great idea for Christmas but do remember to start your shopping early so you won’t face any shipping delays.

Easy to Research

You don’t want to make a mistake and buy kids puzzles that aren’t age appropriate or that has been poorly reviewed. The good thing about Internet shopping is the moment you find something you like you can do a quick Internet search and find out all the information you could ever hope to want on the product. Plus, you can always send questions via email to the site’s customer service department. Some even have toll-free numbers you can call to get instant answers to your questions before making a purchase.

The interesting thing is that sometimes online customer service is friendly and more efficient than what you’ll find in actual stores.

Safer Transactions

With newer advances in online security, you can actually feel more secure by shopping online with your credit card than you could in an actual store. That’s just another good reason to buy kids puzzles as gifts online.

Smalltime Child offers a great selection of Kids Puzzles and Childrens Puzzles. Check us out for our great selection of Puzzles for Kids.

Experience Gifts: Ideas for Kids

General No Comments »
SECAUCUS, NJ - NOVEMBER 20: A child tries out...
Image by Getty Images via Daylife

Instead of giving a child in your life another useless piece of plastic or kit that will stay unopened, why not give them an experience that will truly open their eyes and give them something to remember? An experience gift can do just that. Usually presented in the form of a gift certificate, an experience gift entitles the owner to a few hours or day of an experience.

Experience gifts come in a wide range of activities. No matter what the child or teen gift recipient is interested in, you can probably find an experience gift that relates to their interests.

Here are a few ideas to get you thinking about experience gifts for kids:

Craft classes.

Kids love to get messy and craft classes give them the opportunity to do just that. You can find craft classes at local art studios and children’s centers. Art museums, art supply stores and community centers may also offer craft classes. You can purchase one-on-one lessons or enroll the child in a few months of classes, after speaking to his or her parents first, of course. The types of classes offered will depend on the studio or center. Younger children might enjoy painting while older children may find the challenge of pottery very exhilarating.

Behind-the-scenes tour.

A sneak peek at what goes on behind closed doors at the zoo or aquarium is a perfect experience gift. Call local attractions and see if they offer behind the scenes tours or other events that let children see their favorite attraction from a different viewpoint. For an add-along gift with the gift certificate, you could give the child a disposable camera.

Cooking classes.

You’d be surprised at how much children enjoy cooking, even at a young age. Local community centers, restaurants and children’s centers may provide “Mom and Me” or “Young Chef” cooking classes that you could give as a gift. Make sure to ask about age restrictions and the equipment needed for the class. You could give an apron as an add-along gift to include with the gift certificate.

Horseback riding lessons.

Most children these days don’t get the experience of being close to horses. You can make your gift recipient’s day by signing him or her up for horseback riding lessons. Call around to horse farms in the area or search online for ranches that offer horseback riding lessons. Normally, unless the child is of a certain age, he or she has to be accompanied by an adult. You can find group lessons or private classes.

All of these ideas make wonderful gifts for kids who seem to have it all, or for children in your life who you want to honor with a special experience. Be sure to call around to find out what is available in your area.

For more ideas, visit a website that specializes in experience gifts, from chartered sailing excursions to thrilling NASCAR rides and just about everything in between. Or give a event tickets.

What Not To Buy For Kids’ Toys: Some Cautionary Words On Baby Gifts

General No Comments »
TOLUCA LAKE, CA - AUGUST 16: Actress Marisol ...

We all want to give baby gifts in the form of supplies and toys that will provide for the safety and comfort of the baby and mother. The fact that these gifts will stimulate the physical and mental development of the child is an added bonus. However, we can make mistakes regarding how safe some toys are.

What to Buy

Let us start with the qualities that we must look for when purchasing baby gifts. First, the gift must be age-appropriate. Toy manufacturers generally put warning labels about small parts that can cause choking and other hazards, including the age bracket for the toy; pay attention to them and follow accordingly.

Second, look for durable materials like molded plastic and wood. You might pay more, but the quality will be worth it. Third, make sure that the materials used are non-toxic. You can ask other buyers about their experience with the toy, particularly about allergic reactions. Fourth, ensure that the toy stimulates the mind and body at a particular stage of development. Again, go for age-appropriate toys.

What Not to Buy

Not all baby gifts are as safe as they purport to be; that is just heavy advertisement. There are baby accessories that consumer groups have declared unsafe and unfit for baby’s use.

Most doctors now recommend that soft beddings, stuffed toys, quilts, and pillows be removed from cribs. They are definitely cute, but can be fatal - they are suffocating and choking hazards. In some instances, they can produce asthma in small children because of dust mites and fluffs. If you insist on a crib gift, ensure that it has a firm mattress, a fitted mattress pad, and a crib sheet only.

Do not give baby gifts like sleep positioners either. They are as much a suffocation hazard as soft beddings. Just let the expectant mother know that babies need to sleep without pillows and other sleep supports.

Baby bath seats are not safe either. To date, these have been linked to hundreds of cases of drowning and injuries. You would be better off giving the expectant mother a baby bath tub with accessories.

Do not purchase for gift purposes diaper changing tables with only three guard rails. Go for four guard rails and test the stability of the table itself.

Do not buy baby gifts made of flimsy plastic, ever. These can easily bend and break, which can cause cuts, injuries, and choking in small children. If you must buy anything made of plastic, be sure that it is high-quality plastic.

Basically, you should use your prior experience with a baby product before actually giving it as a gift. Or, if you are not a parent, ask other parents. Referrals are always a good way to gauge quality and dependability.

Also, actually testing the product’s features like foldability, locking mechanisms, rough edges, and small parts is good practice. Just do not sit on the high chair or lie in the crib yourself.

In the end, you would want to give baby gifts that you would like to receive when it is your turn to be the honoree of a baby shower.

Make child safety your paramount concern when choosing baby shower gifts. One of these is the baby gift sets with tub and accessories from BabyLandGifts.com. Aside from these, you can choose from a wide and colorful array of baby gifts from their online store.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, FL - OCTOBER 02: In this ha...
Image by Getty Images via Daylife

Radio controlled toys are great gifts for children. Remember back when you were a child. Playing in the yard or the park was always a blast. Think back and recall your favorite toys. Maybe it was a bike, or perhaps you had a great kite. Now think about your kids, and imagine the joy you’ll bring to them when you give them a cool new radio controlled toy. These types of toys are especially popular for young boys. As kids, they look at the grownups driving cars, flying airplanes, and zooming around in helicopters. They want to imitate this adult life, and it is entirely possible.

Playing with radio controlled toys is one of the most fun things for young boys to do. They see helicopters and planes flying on their favorite television shows, and also in the real world. For many, it is a fantasy to be able to fly these amazing machines. We’ve all fantasized about flying, but you can let them get as close as possible to reality with certain toys. Believe it or not, radio controlled toys are really easy to use. They can be charged and then they are ready to go.

Maybe your son loves race cars. Get him a remote control and watch how much fun he has. He can let his imagination go free in the driveway, driving his toy car at high speeds to rush past the checkered flag in his mind. Perhaps your nephews are big fans of helicopters. With radio controlled toys, they can actually fly miniature version of the real thing! Take them to the park and sit back as they take flight. Other toys such as remote controlled boats, planes, and motorcycles are also great options.

We only get to be kids once. The time flies by, and they grow up in the blink of an eye. Make the most out of the time. Practically every young boy would absolutely love to have a radio controlled toy. You know that look of disappointment on their faces when they get a gift and it turns out to be socks or crayons. Get them something they’ll really go crazy about. They will appreciate the fact that you care enough to give them something cool and fun. They’ll be bragging to their friends for weeks about the awesome new toy they got. The truth is, even some adults like radio controlled toys, so try playing with them, and maybe you’ll have some fun too.

Christmas Gifts for Girls

LONDON, ENGLAND - AUGUST 08: Selfridges depar...
Image by Getty Images via Daylife

“Sugar and spice and all things nice, that’s what little girls are made of”

There’s nothing better than seeing your daughter, niece or god daughter opening up her gift on Christmas morning and seeing the look of pure joy on her face.

That’s the fun part - it’s the whole getting to the shops part that’s not particularly fun. Over the Christmas period the shops will inevitably be crowded and full of screaming children demanding that they get this or that; harassed parents who can’t remember what the little ones wrote on their Christmas list and frustrated shop assistants who’ve heard “Jingle Bells” one too many times to stay sane. That doesn’t sound like much fun, does it?

Buying Christmas gifts online is the ultimate solution - hell you don’t even need to leave home. There are various sites out there on which you can buy Christmas gifts for kids online and most will advise you what to get the little princess according to her age, you wouldn’t want to buy her something that was last cool when you were a kid, would you?

Some of these online gift finding services will even wrap and deliver the prezzie with a hand written card, perfect for those who begin to feel a panic attack set in when surrounded by rolls of Christmassy paper and sellotape. Finding a Christmas gift for the little girl in your life could not be easier.

Top Five Christmas Gift Ideas for Little Girls

To make this festive season a little more fun and a little less frustrating here’s a list of fantastic gift ideas for girls:

Dress Up

Girls love jewellery no matter how young or old they are. Fortunately buying jewellery for the little ones won’t break the bank. They love sparkly sets of stick on earrings, bangles, beads, lockets and rings - you’ll never go wrong with this option.

Girls also love to play dress up. If she’s seriously in to fairy princesses this year get her a little outfit that she can parade around in with a wand and perhaps a crown - she’ll feel like the princess she is in no time. There are loads of little outfits out there from her favourite cartoon hero, to her ultimate girly fantasy - and don’t forget a pair of grown up little fluffy or sparkly heels are always a winner. If she’s a little older, and you should always ask for the parents’ consent here, you could get her a little makeup set - they love to emulate their mums and having their own fun makeup will make them feel all grown up.

Educational & Games

Learning doesn’t have to be boring, in fact educational gifts always go down a treat - and it’s not only the kids but the parents who’ll love you too. A set of books, an artists easel and a paint set, crayons, colouring in books,  building blocks, puzzles or a chemistry set all make good Christmas gifts for girls.

All kids love games - whether they’re board games or games they can play outside. Games are an especially good gift suggestion if there’s more than one kid in the family. Try looking for games that they can play together like kid’s scrabble, swing ball, mini golf, twister or magic cards. Preferably break them out when the adults are looking for a bit of peace and quite - which tends to happen quite often over the festive season.

Dolls

Dolls are always a great idea when looking for a Christmas gift for a little girl. One thing you need to remember that dolls are not simply little plastic babies anymore. They come in every shape and size, they cry, they eat, they walk and talk, some of them look like disco divas and others like punks or emos (scary I know) so you’ll need to browse through the options on offer and select one. If you get lost just give her mum a call she’ll know which one will go down best because rest assured she’s been listening to the “I want a new doll” for a few weeks now.

Soft Toys

These are winners with the younger set. Buying a fluffy, cuddly toy for your little princess to snuggle with as she watches telly or dreams her big dreams at night is a good gift idea. I’m sure that if you think back to your childhood you’ll remember how much you treasured your favourite soft toy (mine was a bear named Rupert - original, I know) Give a gift that will be loved as much as you loved it this Christmas.

Pretend, Pretend

Little girls love to play make believe. They want to emulate their parents, their older siblings and even what they see on TV. They love playing “house” or going to “work” by playing with their doctor or chef sets. From their pretend ovens, to their tiny grow your own garden sets, and doctors’ medical bags the kids will be in their own little fantasy world for hours at a time.

So now that you’re armed with all the right info, buying Christmas gifts for the girls in your life should be less of a stressful experience this year.

Good Luck & Happy Holidays! Wicked Uncle is the children’s gift finding service for adults who find children to be a bit of an alien concept. They’ve just launched a brand new site which features amazing Christmas gifts for girls.

Instead of having to brave the shops you can purchase a gift in under a minute from the comfort of your own home this year, and we guarantee she’ll love it.
